--"To weep" is similar to "to cry", except that "cry" is used in a more general sense, whilst "weep" is used more for sorrow or sadness; although one can weep for joy. "Weep" is probably stronger and more poetic in its use. Unlike "cry", the word "weep", however, does not also mean "to shout".
