VOCABULARY WITH EXAMPLES:

VALID
- One must have a valid ticket if one wishes to travel on public transport.

WEDGE くさび
-A wedge of wood is thick at one end and thin at the other, and can be used for holding a door open or for stopping a vehicle sliding backwards down a hill.

KEEP BACK 下がる、隠す
-Please keep back from the track, otherwise you are in danger of being hit by the runners.
-It was quite clear that, for some reason, she was keeping back very important information.

ASHORE 海岸に
-ANCHOR
=The ship sailed into the harbour and as soon as it had dropped anchor the passengers and crew began to come ashore.

BRAND
-She has been using the same brand of toothpaste since she was a child.

CLASSIFY 分類する
-The books in a library are classified according to the subject matter they deal with.

EVIDENT
-It was quite evident to everyone present that he had no intention of keeping his promise.

DEPENDENT - INDEPENDENT (adj)-
DEPENDENCE - INDEPENDENCE (n)-DEPENDANT (n)
Dependent and independent are adjectives, whilst dependence and independence are nouns.
For example:-
It was a dependent organisation until last year, but now it is quite independent.
His dependence on his parents was total, but now he has achieved a certain degree of independence.
Although he is not married he has several dependants, such as his mother and the children of his brother, who was killed in a car accident last month.

IN DIFFICULTY
-When a ship is in difficulties at sea, it sends out messages for help to other ships that might be in the area.

FEEBLE 弱々しい
-It was a very feeble excuse he gave for being late. It did not convince anyone.

GREASE
-The kitchen was incredibly dirty. It had grease stains everywhere.

HEADQUARTERS
-The headquarters of our organisation is, of course, in the capital.

COME ROUND 訪れる、目を覚ます
-I'll come round and see you next Sunday, if that's all right with you.
Pay-day comes around once a week for some people and once a month for others.
The boxer was knocked out in the third round and did not come round for some minutes.
